A small to medium sized pigskin leather Kit Bag stamped. H. Greaves, New St. Birmingham.
Kit Bags are often erroneously referred to as Gladstones, which although similar are a different shape. This bag has a leather lining with 2 pockets to one side of the interior. To secure it, there is a brass slide lock, with the key missing, and 2 short belt straps. The bag has 6 brass stud feet to keep it raised off a wet surface.
The bag is stamped to the mouth, above the lock Made By. H. Greaves New St Birmingham., Henry Greaves made and retailed a variety of leather goods from Overland Trunks and Portmanteaus to Dress baskets either side of 1900. They were also silversmiths and sold humidors, boxes and a variety of luxury goods. As well as manufacturing their own stock, they also bought in goods from other makers. They had various addresses on New Street in Birmingham at different times including 6, 34, 35 and 36.
This bag is smaller than most Kit Bags and useful for a weekend away. Circa 1900.
